My Fool Proof Website Building Plan

There are seven key components to building a successful website. If you have been thinking of exploring how to build your own website and you choose to follow my seven step plan, you will be able to create a business that will provide an income for you.
2019 is a great time to start your online business. There are so many opportunities and billions of people with online access. There are millions of niches you can choose from. I’ll talk more about choosing a niche in a minute.

First I want to get a few misconceptions out of the way. I don’t want you to get stuck in a web of thinking that is unhealthy and will ultimately discourage you.

  • Your blog/website will not make money immediately – you will need to spend some time developing your website and creating content consistently. It will take time to develop a following and become an authority. It will happen if you are persistent and don’t give up. The only way you won’t succeed is if you give up.
  • This is not a get-rich-quick scheme – I know it sounds redundant because I just said basically the same thing but it is worth repeating. If it sounds too good to be true it is. There are many online scams out there that claim to be able to make money for you within a short period of time with little money spent by you. I repeat, they are scams! Read my scam alerts here to avoid being taken advantage of. If you have encountered a scam and want to help others avoid it please leave a comment below and share your story.
  • You do need to have knowledge about your niche or have an interest in the topic. Trying to build a website around a niche just because you think you can make a lot of money from it will come off as fake and you won’t be successful. You need to provide consistent, good, accurate information so that your audience trusts you and keeps coming back for new information. Being passionate about your niche will make it easy for you to keep pumping out content and you will enjoy writing and working on your site.

The most profitable and popular blogs today are run by entrepreneurs who are passionate about their subject matter and have committed to providing answers to the problems faced by their audience. They are excited to publish posts on new ideas and to help others. They know that being consistent and persistent will bring them long term and unlimited income.

If this sounds like you then let’s get started now.

1. Choosing Your Perfect Niche

Remember that your goal is to become an authority in your niche. You will be living and breathing this topic every day. Think off all the things that you really enjoy in life. Think 24/7/365. When I was looking for a niche I had a whole page of things I either love or have special knowledge of. Some the things on my list might seem like they could not possible be a niche (like sleeping, reading, taking walks) but think again, each of these could be a very viable niche. For example, I love coffee and it would be easy and fun for me to research all things coffee. I would love to know what the best coffee maker is and I’m sure other people would too (I could link to Amazon and sell that coffee maker on my website). I would also like to have pretty and/or fun coffee mugs. I wonder if I could roast and grind my own coffee beans. Look at that – I already have tons of ideas to write about and products to sell.

Your perfect niche is unique to you. Make a list of everything you enjoy. Think about what you do around the clock every day. Write down the things that you enjoy the most or that you have specialized knowledge about. Narrow that list down to the things that you are passionate about or that you believe you could write endlessly about. Pick one and get started!

2. Decide on a Name and Domain

You can name your blog or website anything that you want. It certainly can help to have something related to your niche. Many people choose their name or a nickname as the name for their website.

Brainstorm as many ideas as you can come up with. Choose variations of the same name, switch the words around. No idea is a bad idea. Think of some of the giants. Google and Apple are great examples. They don’t have an association with the products they represent yet they are huge brands now.

You do not have to have the same website and domain name. Your domain name is the www.yourwebsite.com name. I prefer to have my website and domain name be the same. I think it is cleaner, and easier for people to find me. I also like to choose a name that I can have the .com of. You might be ok with .org or .net. I just prefer .com because I think people have more trust in a .com website.

It is fun to come up with a catchy website name that you like and are proud to own. It should be easy to remember and not have a difficult spelling. It would be terrible to have people looking for your website and unable to remember your name or how to spell your name.

There are a lot of websites out there so you may have to search for a while to find a .com with a name that you want.

You will need to research available domain names. Let’s talk about that next.

3. Purchasing Your Own Domain

It is really exciting to purchase your own domain. Once you purchase it, it is yours for as long as you pay the yearly fee. It costs roughly $15 per year to own a domain. I own multiple domains. It can be kind of addicting. I have many things that I would love to have as a niche and if I come up with a good name and it is available in .com I purchase it. I don’t recommend this for beginners because it can get pricey. You really only need one so just worry about your first niche and domain for now.

There are a number of hosting platforms where you can purchase your domain and host your website. If you want to get started for free with a starter website before transitioning to your .com domain, check out my #1 recommendation for building a free starter website. You can start absolutely for free, no credit card required, and then purchase your .com domain when you are ready.

Start a free siterubix website now and purchase your own domain later.

4. Website Hosting

I touched on this a briefly above. when you have a domain name you will have to have it hosted in order for people to see your website. Your website hosting service is where all of your website information will be kept safe and it is how people will type in your URL (your .com name) in order to find your website. There are many blog hosting services. Some are free and some are not. See my #1 recommendation above. When you are looking for a hosting service you will want to take the following into account – Security, Support, Speed, Features and History. Wealthy Affiliate is the hosting service (and community and training platform) that I use. I didn’t start out using WA but now that I have joined WA I will always belong to this community and I host all of my websites here. We are going to talk now about the actual building of your website. Prior to these next steps you should have your niche, name, domain and hosting. If you don’t, then go to Wealthy Affiliate now and start a free account so you can start learning and building your website.

5. Designing Your Website

Now for the fun part. You get to choose the look and feel of your website. Choosing a template or theme can take a little while. You want to make sure your theme is easy to work with and has a look and color scheme that you like. I use WordPress.com as my Content Management System (CMS). It is free and has many themes to choose from. It is easy to use for a beginner’s also.

If you don’t think WordPress is for you there are many other options like wix, squarespace and blogger.

I like WordPress because I can easily add in widgets which allow me to ad banners or ads to the side of my website. I can add plug ins that allow me to collect email addresses or get comments. It is easy to use and offers options to customize your theme and really make it your own.

You may want to check out your competition at this point and see what their websites look like. If they are appealing to the same audience you are targeting you may want to have a similar set up or look. The number of people shopping online is staggering.  By the year 2021 it is expected that 2.14 billion people worldwide will be purchasing goods or services online.  That number is up from 1.66 billion in 2016.  Pretty amazing and very encouraging for you as you start your online business.

The visitors to your website are going to make a fairly quick determination whether or not they trust you and your website and if they are going to stick around and read your content or not. So you want to make sure you have a professional and well laid out website with easy navigation. You will also want to ensure that your website is mobile friendly(responsive).  It is imperative that your website looks as good on a smartphone as it does on a laptop.

6. Writing Content

This will be the way you drive traffic to your website. In the beginning stages of building your business content creation will be your focus. Some more established websites that have been around over 10 years have thousands of posts.

The first writing you will do is creating your must have site pages. You will need an About Me page, Privacy Policy/Disclaimer, and Contact Page. If you choose to go with my #1 recommended platform I mentioned above these pages are already created for you. You only have to add your domain specific information. These pages create the foundation for your website. They are pretty uniform from site to site but allow you a little room to let your visitors begin to find out who you are.

Your posts are where you get to start sharing your knowledge and passion with your targeted audience. You want to create value for your readers. Solve a problem for them, write about what you know and what you love. Share with them the things that have gotten in your way int the past and how you got around them. Tell them stories with your content. You should write as if you are talking with a close friend. You will come across as genuine, caring, wanting to help and most importantly, as a real person.

One thing to remember is that the more writing you do the better you will get at it. You don’t have to be a good writer to be able to write good content. You just have to follow some guidelines. First of all, remember to write like you are talking with a friend. Once you have that down you can consistently write about things that will help the people visiting your website.

Posts should be at least 1000 words long. That may seem like a lot at first but honestly, when I write I don’t think I could manage to stay under 1000 words – once you get going the words will flow easily for you.

Adding images and using small paragraphs with enough white space will let your readers view your content and be able to read it easier. There are some places to go for free stock photos. Canva is a popular one, as is Wikimedia.

Using keywords in your content will help drive traffic to your website. Keywords are the words people search for when they type in the search bar. I use Jaaxy as my keyword research tool. It is fast, easy and free. What’s not to like. You can read more about Jaaxy here in my Jaaxy review.

Creating links to other content within your own website (internal links) and to outside sources (external links) will help your readers find other valuable content and establish you as an authority. The search engines like links as well, which is also good for you. These little tips will have a big impact when you start posting content to your new website.

At this point you have chosen a niche and a name, possibly bought a domain and created some base content.

Congratulations! You have a website!

Take a minute to celebrate what you have accomplished so far. It is a great step toward building your online business and a profit center for years to come.

I’ve added one step now because once you have your website you still have to get the word out about it so let’s talk about that a little bit.

7. Promoting Your Website

Once you’ve done all of this great work to build your website you will want to share it with as many people as possible. Social Networking is the best way of getting your information out there. Each post you write will be shared/promoted on the social media platforms you choose.

You may already be a part of some of these networks and if you are then you may want to stick with the ones you know for now. Here are the ones you should consider:

Facebook – For sharing videos and content

Instagram – posting photos, quotes and short stories

Pintrest – posting and pinning photos

Twitter – tweeting about your posts

LinkedIn – Professional network for sharing content

Reddit – commenting on your niche topics

YouTube – Sharing videos about your niche

I would recomment starting with a couple of social networks and once you are comfortable and established you can expand. It can be pretty involved belonging to the forums and message boards for each social network. Just throwing photos and messages onto these networks isn’t enough. You need to be actively engaged in the networks to really promote your website and gain traction.

Other ways to build traffic to your website.

Guest blogging – If you are cultivating relationships within your social networks you will gain opportunities to guest blog. JUst look for services you can use and promote and offer to write about the benefits on another complimentary blog.

Interview your mentors – share the experiences of others who are succesful and who you look up to and learn from yourself. What better way to learn and share at the same time.

There are multiple strategies that you will learn over time as you grown and develop your business.

What Comes Next?

Once you’ve laid the groundwork for your website you can start monetizing it. There are many ways to accomplish that and here are some of the most common:

Join and Affiliate Network – There are tons of affiliate opportunities for monetizing your website. The most well-known is Amazon. If you become an Amazon affiliate you will put links to Amazon on your posts. Let’s say you have a post about coffee makers and you link to your choice for the best coffee maker and someone clicks on your link and buys a coffee maker. You get a percentage of the sale. Cool, right? You also get a percentage of anything else they may buy while they are shopping during that visit.

Join ad networks – put ads on your site advertising products that are relevent to your niche. Google Adsense is one ad network.

Online courses – If you have special knowledge on a topic you can develop a course and sell it. create a guide or tutorials that teach simple steps for the skills you have.

In summary, when choosing to start your own website you will need to:

  1. Choose your niche – find your passion
  2. Decide on a name for your website
  3. Purchase your own domain – I prefer .com
  4. Look for a Host – check out Wealthy Affiliate (link below)
  5. Design your website/blog, get creative, have fun
  6. Write content – and write some more
  7. Promote your website on social networks and everywhere

And always look for ways to monetize your website and keep writing and promoting.

This is an amazing and fun way to make a living. I’m not saying you won’t get frustrated at times but when you work through the frustrating parts it is worth it.

Simply keep pushing forward and follow the 7 step process. The only way to fail is to quit which I know you won’t do. So, here’s to your success!!
