Conducting Your Dream Job Search
So, you have decided that your current situation doesn’t qualify as your dream job. Congratulations! That means it is time to begin your dream job search. Take a moment to enjoy this and celebrate. The search is an exciting process!
Dream Big
When you think about the next chapter in your life don’t limit yourself. Self limiting beliefs about what you can’t or shouldn’t do are not a part of this process so discard them now. Think about when you were a kid or a teen and what you thought you wanted to be when you grew up. What types of jobs do hear about now and say “wow, I wish I could do that?” Whatever it is, you can do it. You can develop new skills, continue your education, change you beliefs.
Don’t get caught up on the amount of time it will take to develop skills or get the training you need. Time will pass while you get that education. Guess what? Time will still pass if you stay in your current situation. So now is the time to get started!
Narrowing Your Search
Now that you have done the out of the box thinking and have some grand ideas about the job you want, let’s narrow it down. Let’s say you decided you want to be a writer. That sounds amazing. Now you need to take the time to do a little research.
Do you want to freelance? Do you want to be a novelist? Is copy writing what you long to do? Would you prefer editing to writing? Do want to work for an organization and if so, what kind of organization? Think about the specifics of how you really want to spend your days. Would you be happy at home all day sipping on coffee and taking the dog out for a short walk after lunch or do you crave the hussle of a busy office setting and people to bounce ideas off and make plans with? You don’t just want a new career path, you want the career and the right situation for you.
Networking
Networking is one of the best ways to research the job of your dreams. It is inspiring and exciting to meet people who are doing what you want to be doing. It is also a great way to find out about job openings that are currently available or may be on the horizon. Being involved in a network of people who are excited about the same things you are excited about is exhilarating and will propel you forward faster than you could have imagined. People like to talk about what they do and they like to help other people. So ask someone who is currently a part of the community you want to belong to how to join. They will most likely be honored that you reached out to them.
Make sure you have some questions in mind when you get the opportunity to network. Ask people what they like about their position and the people they are associated with. Some people enjoy working for large, high profile organizations while other people really thrive in the smaller more personal settings. Ask people what makes each setting desirable to them. Find out which offers more flexibility, better pay, chance to learn and grow. If it matters to you, it most likely matters to others as well and they will share what they have learned.
Online Job Search
There are many websites that you can go to and research for openings in a field. If you enter the name of a field you are interested in many similar jobs will also show up. You can find FT or PT work in your town or across the globe. You may find a traditional job in a “brick and mortar” store, a freelance position with no office location or anything in between. Some of the more popular websites for job searches are Indeed, GlassDoor, Monster or even your local Department of Labor.
Many of these options require you to sign up for access and they will alert you via email when new and relevant opportunities come about. It is incumbent on you to monitor these opportunities and apply to those that interest you.
The Interview
It is important research companies that you are interested in and have relevant industry related questions ready. And remember, yes, you are being interviewed however you are also interviewing the company. You may decide that this career you were set on having isn’t really the right fit for you. Don’t forget that you are searching for your dream job here! Anything less has the potential to turn into a nightmare.
How I Found My Dream Job
I am a very thorough researcher and so I did lots of looking and talking and questioning, mostly online. Online can be a big scary world and there certainly are people who are not legitimately looking to help others (scammers). I was very fortunate to find a group of like minded people who opened up and shared their world with me and helped me discover my dream job. They answered every question I could come up with honesty and integrity. I started a FREE account with this group and shortly after that I signed up as a Premium Member. I haven’t looked back since. I have been developing my dream job and growing my online business for over a year now. I feel very lucky to be a member of this group. Conclusion
The search for your dream job is an amazing and wonderful time. I find it to be exciting and little like falling in love. You are dating potential companies and flirting a little to see if they might be a good match. If you find that perfect fit you should have butterflies in your stomach and a tingly feeling and before you know it you will be in a “relationship.”
